We know how various toxins found in processed foods and environmental pollutants affect the body, but what about “energetic” toxins?
What is toxic energy, how does it affect the body, and how can we prevent it from taking over our lives?
Toxic Energy
Toxic, or negative energy, is anything in your environment that alters or depletes your physical, mental, or emotional well-being. A lot of these energies are subtle and you may not be aware of their presence until all of a sudden you realize your attitude, thoughts, or mood have taken a negative downturn.
In addition, you may begin to feel the physical symptoms of stress that you’ve never experienced before. In the rough and tumble of everyday living, these stressors may be hidden. This is where Mind-Body awareness can come in handy.
Types of Toxic Energy
EMFs: Many scientists believe that spending too much time on our computers and cell phones has a negative effect on our bodies because of the electric magnetic fields (EMFs), or radiation, these devices emit. Taking breaks from these devices is essential, in addition to turning them off at least 30 minutes before bedtime to ensure a better night’s sleep.
Sensory Input: Sometimes loud noises coming from construction or other negative auditory input can affect our emotions, putting us on edge whether we’re aware of it or not. This also includes what you’re looking at on your computer screen as well. Social media in particular has been proven to contribute to low levels of anxiety and depression. Limiting your time on sites that “play with your mind” is a good idea.
People: Ever heard of “energy vampires?” These folks “steal your energy” in many different ways, whether it’s bending your ear for way too long or pushing your buttons. Identify these people and find subtle ways to either eliminate them from your life or limit your time around them.
Clutter: Having a disorganized, cluttered environment actually affects your mind, making it harder to focus. Set some time aside to tidy up (especially your workspace), or do it piecemeal throughout the day. Take a short break to wash the dishes or do a load of laundry while you’re eating your lunch.
Physical Symptoms of Toxic Energy
We’ve all spent the last year and a half navigating the effects of COVID-19 and it has taken a toll on all of us (talk about toxic energy!). Checking in with yourself and being more Mind-Body conscious is essential. Be aware of the physical symptoms of toxic energy:
Poor digestion and other stomach pains
Sleep disturbances
Fatigue
Exhaustion
Headaches
Skin outbreaks
Ways to decompress from toxic energy
Make an effort to set aside some quiet time for meditation, yoga, or similar activity that quiets the mind—away from toxic stressors.
2. Limit your time on EMF-emitting devices. Obviously, many of us have to work at our computers for several hours a day, but when it’s time to shut it down, SHUT IT DOWN!
3. Surround yourself with positive people as much as you can.
4.Keep nutrition high on your priority list and try to exercise as much as possible.
5. Schedule some “Me” time for rejuvenation, like a massage session.
Unfortunately, toxic energy isn’t going anywhere. But being aware of the stressors and taking measures to overcome their effects is now in your wheelhouse--if you’re mindful. Harnessing this power is an essential step to Mind-Body awareness.
